Molecular medicine began with the discovery by Linus Pauling that “an abnormal structure of the hemoglobin molecule causes sickle cell disease.” Nowadays, it is known that many diseases are caused by congenital or acquired abnormalities in the structure and function of biomolecules, which provides us the clues to unravel the mystery of life phenomena.

Through the investigation of abnormalities of proteins and genes causing blood diseases and immune disorders, we aim to explore the universal mechanisms that supports the living organisms. Specifically, we mainly target erythrocytes / erythroid cells and T cells / immune cells. Ongoing projects include structure & function of cellular membrane, cell differentiation & maturation, quality control of cellular membrane proteins, immunological memory & inflammation. Furthermore, we aim to develop novel therapeutics for diseases based on our findings.

While valuing the curiosity, awareness, and ideas that are raised through pathological analysis of disease cases and daily experiments, we try to carry out essential research that is broadly applicable to the medical science / life science and does not fade over time. We hope our students to acquire the attitude as scientists through the research that can re-creates the common sense. It is the philosophy of our laboratory to contribute to science and human wisdom while feeling the joy of science.
